Bone Broth Boost: For Immunity, Gut Health & More

Bone Broth Boost: For Immunity, Gut Health & More

By 6 months, babies are exploring solids, and with that comes a whole new opportunity to support their gut, immune system, and development with nutrient-dense foods. One of the easiest, most nourishing staples to have on hand? Homemade bone broth.

It’s rich in minerals, amino acids, and compounds that help little tummies thrive, and this simple trick is a great way to boost your baby’s meals without overwhelming them (or you).

Why Bone Broth Matters

Bone broth has been a traditional healing food for centuries, and it’s easy to see why. Simmering bones, connective tissue, and vegetables extracts minerals like calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, and creates a comforting, easy-to-digest broth.

But beyond the warmth and flavour, bone broth contains key nutrients and amino acids that support:

  • Immune health (thanks to zinc, collagen, and glycine)

  • Gut integrity and digestion (gelatin and glutamine support a strong gut lining)

  • Hydration and mineral balance

  • Overall nourishment during times of illness, teething or low appetite

For babies just starting solids, bone broth can act as both a gentle flavour enhancer and a functional food to help them build resilience from the inside out.

Real-Life Ways to Add It In

You don’t need to serve broth in a cup for it to work its magic. Here’s how to use it:

  • Stir into purées instead of water or milk

  • Cook grains like quinoa, rice, or couscous in bone broth

  • Add to lentils, soups, or stews for extra nutrition

  • Use to sauté veggies or simmer meatballs

  • Freeze into mini silicon pods and pop one into meals as needed

This is one of those simple boosts that makes everything more nourishing.

What’s In the Bone Broth Boost?

For our version, we use:

Chicken carcass (x8) and wings (x12) (organic is best)

1 carrot, chopped

1 stick celery, chopped

1 onion with skin-on (optional)

Rosemary, but any fresh herbs will do

Peppercorns

Filtered water to cover

Simmer for 8–12 hours

Strain and freeze in silicon freezer pods for fuss-free meal upgrades. Baby-safe from 6 months+ when starting solids. Bonus: this works well for toddlers and the whole fam too.

Storage + Safety Tips

  • Store in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for 2–3 months

  • If buying premade, look for no added salt, onion, or flavour enhancers

  • Always cool completely before freezing

  • For babies under 12 months, serve in small amounts as part of a meal—not as a main drink

Bone broth is a gentle, traditional food that supports immunity and digestion from the very start. It’s not about reinventing the wheel, just about giving everyday meals a nourishing edge.
